Terbinafine cream 1%
Recommended by NICE and in the cochrane report for prefered choice of treatment for tinea pedis.
The 15gram size packaging makes an ideal retail product to your patients.
Indications
Fungal infections of the skin caused through dermatophytes (e.g., T. Rubrum), or Candida (Candida Albicans)
Actions
Fungicidal effect on dermatophytes and moulds.
Fungicidal or fungistatic against yeasts.
Terbinafine reduces the production of ergosterol and increases the production of squalene resulting in fungal cell death.
Topical Terbinafine doesn`t affect the metabolism of other drugs through the Cytochrome P-450.
Application
To apply to clean dry skin.
In a thin layer on and around the area.
To be used once or twice a day. Usually for 2 weeks.
Advice to patients should always be to continue for the 2 weeks and not to finish when the symptoms ease which could be after a couple of days. The stopping and starting of treatment can prolong the required treatment with signs and symptoms of the fungal infection returning.
