Go plastic free and reduce your carbon footprint

Helping you to reduce your carbon footprint

After Julys call to action to curb our plastic waste with the Plastic-Free Month campaign and International Plastic Bag-Free Day, we wanted to highlight the importance and benefits of collectively reducing our carbon footprint. In the UK, national days such as this drive efforts to cut down on non-recyclable plastics.

Reducing our carbon footprint from plastic use is crucial, both at work and at home. Plastics have a hefty carbon footprint, as are derived from fossil fuels like oil and gas and take millennia to decompose naturally in landfills.

When it comes to laundry (washing and tumble drying), remember that polyester fabrics release more microplastics into the environment compared to natural fibres. Opt for cotton-rich uniforms and bamboo or cotton socks. It is paramount in healthcare to launder clinical uniforms at 60 degrees Celsius or above to prevent the spread of infections to vulnerable patients.

The government and environmentalists highlight disposable wipes to have a significant impact on the environment. There has been new legislation passed by the previous government to reduce and ban wipes containing plastics. We stock Clinell universal biodegradable wipes; however, as mentioned on Clinell’s website there is a need for a small number of plastics in disinfectant wipes for surfaces otherwise the cleaning disinfectant will be absorbed by the natural fibres and is not then available to cleanse your surfaces.

At Canonbury, we have made strides in our packaging, favouring non-plastic alternatives and recyclable cardboard. The warehouse is using compostable packaging for your orders. Some of our suppliers have changed their packaging to reduce the plastic packaging – cardboard outer only (Swann Morton blades) or compostable sleeves. However, we acknowledge there is a way to go to become plastic-free. (pictures of the warehouse packing)

Within the offices and warehousing, we have recycling points; however, Canonbury encourages us all to use refillable water bottles and reusable cups.

Did you know that paper cups in coffee shops use polyethene to hold the cups together and stop the cups from disintegrating when fluid is placed inside?
